Competitive InformationNone of the competition called out in the knifeware comparison (Cutco, Henckels Twin Select, Wusthof Classic Black, or Global) have the capacity to take on as many tasks as the iCook Shears and Global doesn’t even offer shears. The iCook Shears can perform ten different functions. The competition does not come close (most perform 3-5 different functions) and the Wusthof shears are the most basic of the lot.
Product AdvantageThese Multipurpose Shears combine the best features of game, fish, poultry, and kitchen shears, as well as other useful features not available in other kitchen shears to perform ten different functions.
- Wash the Shears in a solution of Dish Drops and vinegar before the first use to remove any lingering oils or polishes from the blades.
- Carefully wash the Shears by hand with Dish Drops and water immediately after each use. Towel dry.
- Keep the Shears out of the reach of children.
- Use the iCook Knife & Shears Sharpener to maintain the blade edge with regular and frequent sharpening.
- For maximum performance, sharpen the blade edge before each use.
- If a blade becomes dull and honing has little or no effect, sharpening will require a whetstone or diamond steel. You may choose to have your knives professionally sharpened.
- If storing the Shears for an extended period of time, apply a thin coat of vegetable oil to the blades’ surfaces to prevent corrosion and wrap the blades in newspaper.
- Do not wash the Shears in the dishwasher.
- Do not use abrasive scrubbers or cleansers to clean the Shears.
- Do not, for safety concerns, soak the Shears.
- Do not allow food residue to remain on the blades for prolonged periods of time.
- Do not store the Shears in a moist environment.
- Do not put the Shears in direct contact with flames.
Frequently Asked QuestionsWhy is having a good pair of Multipurpose Shears important?
A good pair of multipurpose shears can help you perform several tasks in the kitchen, even around your home. The iCook Multipurpose Shears have an unmatched ten special functions making things from food preparation to household tasks easier.
What materials are the Shears made from?
The blades are made from high-carbon stainless steel. The handles are a constructed from a durable plastic called polypropylene.
Why is it important to sharpen my Shears?
For three reasons:
- Safety. Forcing a cut with dull shears is one of the easiest ways to injure yourself. Properly sharpened and maintained shears actually help prevent accidents.
- Good cutting action. You will get straighter, cleaner cuts with sharp, well-maintained shears than you will with dull shears.
- Comfort. Using a high level of force over an extended period of time can cause discomfort to your hand. Keeping your shears sharp makes it easier to cut, thereby reducing the required force and time per use.
The iCook Knife & Shears Sharpener sold separately, may be used for the Chef’s Knife, Santoku, Petty Knife, and Paring Knife, as well as the Shears. The Slicer requires professional sharpening due to its serrated edge. Sharpen the Shears in the slot marked by the shears blade icon (located nearest to the center of the Sharpener). There is a carbide blade in the shears slot that has an angle specific to the shears blade. Disassemble the Shears and put the edge of one blade along the carbide blade at a 90° angle. Pull the blade carefully towards you. Repeat approximately seven to ten times. Repeat with the other blade. Never slide the blade back and forth through the sharpener as this can scratch the side of the blade that does not have a cutting edge. For a demonstration on proper use of the Knifeware & Shears Sharpener, check out the Learn About Knifeware section.
How often should I sharpen the Shears?
For maximum performance, the Shears should be sharpened regularly, or before each use.
How do I wash my Shears? Are they dishwasher safe?
We do not recommend that you use an automatic dishwasher for cleaning the Shears. However, the blade edge on the Shears is much thicker than that on the knives and will withstand dishwasher cleaning. Some rusting may occur if the Shears are washed in the dishwasher. For best results, hand wash, as soon as possible after each use, with DISH DROPS® and warm water. Then, towel-dry thoroughly. Never soak the Shears. Before your first use, wash the knives in a solution of DISH DROPS and vinegar to remove any lingering oils or polishes.
What is the best way to remove a stain from the blades of my Shears? The blade surface of my Shears has a light purple tint to it. What is it and can it be removed?
Never use an abrasive scrubber or cleanser to clean the Shears. Stains or a mild discoloration are likely caused by a microscopic layer of food residue and/or a hard water film. This can be removed by gently scrubbing the blade in the direction of the brushed finish using a mild abrasive cleaner such as L.O.C.® Plus Soft Cleanser and a nylon bristle brush. Use extreme caution so as not to get fingers near the cutting edge.
My Shears have developed some rust spots. Why is this and can it be removed?
All stainless steels will corrode to some degree when exposed to salts. The term "stainless" implies a resistance to rusting, pitting and staining; not that the material is rust free. The type of stainless steel used to make knives and shears is recognized as being more susceptible to attack by salts than are the stainless steels commonly used to make cookware. This is because it contains more carbon, which is needed for creating and maintaining an edge. Because of this, it is important that you take special care to follow the care and use instructions provided to minimize the occurrence of rust. If rust spots do occur, they can usually be removed by gently scrubbing the blade in the direction of the brushed finish using a mild abrasive cleaner such as Legacy of Clean Soft Cleanser and a nylon bristle brush. Use extreme caution so as not to get fingers near the cutting edge.
If I need to store the Shears for an extended time, is there anything special I need to do?
If storing your Shears for an extended period of time, apply a thin coat of vegetable oil to the blades’ surfaces to prevent corrosion and wrap the blades in newspaper.
My Shears are hard to open and close. How can I make them easier to use?
Apply some vegetable oil to the joint. Open and close the Shears a few times to work the vegetable oil into the joint to lubricate it.
The joint (nut and bolt) on my Shears is loose making the Shears difficult to put back together again after disassembling.
This is a manufacturing defect. The Shears should be returned for replacement.
What is the difference between the old Shears and the iCook Shears?
Because the old Shears were so popular and could be offered at a good price point, the only thing that was changed was the handle design so that the iCook Shears coordinated more appropriately with the iCook Knifeware.
What are the key selling points of the Shears?
The Shears are versatile having ten different functions:
- Cutting edge
- Nut cracker
- Cap twister
- Bottle opener
- Screw driver
- Wire cutter
- Wire stripper
- Chicken bone cutter
- The blades separate easily for cleaning and sharpening.
